Pouring Foundations or Building Houses

Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection;... Hebrews 6:1
The writer of the book of Hebrews makes his point very clear. There are fundamental foundations of the Christian faith. He points out six of them to us.

  1. Repentance

  2. Faith (to/in God)

  3. Baptisms

  4. Laying on of Hands

  5. Resurrection of the dead

  6. Eternal judgments

These six basic foundations of Christian principle, the writer tells us, are good and needful but, should not have to be laid again and again. There should be a time when we begin to build on the foundation. If the builders of your house had only laid and relaid the foundation you would still not have a house, but they poured it and then begin to build on it. Paul is pointing out that we have these six foundations now lets go on to perfection.

Teleiotēs, the Greek word for perfection means as Thayer defines it, "spiritual perfection" R.E. Carroll in his paper "Holiness In The Book Of Hebrews" tells us that this is "the perfection to which Christians are to "be borne on" [to](pherometha)"

The word phrase "go on" in the KJV means exactly that, it is not a pushing or pressing of self-effort but a resting in Christ, and free from the law of sin and death. Hebrews 4:9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

It is not a perfection of never making a mistake, or being holier than every one else, it is a life totally and recklessly abandoned to God, letting Him have everything, no questions asked no strings attached.

Are you ready to quit pouring foundations and start building your house?
